The Best Gas & EV Charging Credit Cards in 2026
Gas is one of the few spending categories nearly every household hits every month, which makes it a surprisingly underrated place to optimize. Here are the cards that consistently earn the most at the pump -- and how EV charging fits into the picture as it becomes a bigger share of that same spending category.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Chase Sapphire Preferred
The Sapphire Preferred now earns 3x Ultimate Rewards points at gas stations and on EV charging, alongside 3x on dining, select streaming, and online groceries, for a $95 annual fee. Transferred 1:1 to airline partners like United, those points can be worth more than 3% back; Hyatt transfers from the Preferred dropped to 4:3 on October 1, 2026. (The Citi Custom Cash, which used to top this list with 5% on your top category, stopped accepting applications on May 28, 2026.)
Discover it
Discover's rotating 5% categories regularly include gas stations for a full quarter at a time, and Discover matches all cash back earned in your first year for new cardholders -- effectively doubling the value of every rotating-category dollar during that window.
Wells Fargo Autograph
Autograph earns a flat 3x on gas stations year-round with no rotating categories to activate and no spending cap to track -- the simplest option if you would rather not manage quarterly enrollment at all.

What About EV Charging?
Dedicated EV-charging bonus categories are starting to appear: the Sapphire Preferred now earns 3x on EV charging, and Chase Freedom Flex's 5% categories for July-September 2026 included EV charging. Elsewhere they are still rare, and many charging transactions still get coded under general merchandise rather than a gas-station merchant code. Outside those cards, your best bet is the same flat-rate or rotating-gas cards above, since some networks and some card issuers do route charging purchases through gas-adjacent codes.

The Bottom Line
For most households, a rotating 5% card paired with a simple flat-rate backup covers gas (and most current EV charging) better than any single card can on its own. As dedicated EV rewards categories start to roll out, the same rotating-category cards are likely to be first to add them.
